This range includes the generator inlet, properly sized breaker, panel-specific interlock, wiring, conduit where applicable, installation, labeling, and testing.
Permit and inspection fees are not included in this range. When a permit and inspection are required by the applicable local jurisdiction, In Charge Electric’s permitting charge is $345. Generator cords are also available as an optional item for homeowners who need one.
Before providing an exact price, we evaluate the electrical panel manufacturer and configuration, available breaker space, existing panel condition, generator specifications, and desired inlet location.
What Is Included in a Standard Installation?
A typical generator inlet and interlock installation includes:

- Panel-specific mechanical interlock kit

How Does the Location of the Generator Inlet Affect Cost?
The location of the generator inlet is one of the main factors affecting installation cost.
Many generator inlets we install are located directly beside the electrical panel or within approximately 5 feet of it. When the desired inlet location is farther away, additional conduit, wire, materials, and labor are required.
For most installations where the inlet is located within approximately 25 feet of the electrical panel, homeowners can generally expect the installation to fall within the $900 to $1,300 range.
Installations requiring substantially longer distances are less common and need to be evaluated individually.
Do I Need a 30-Amp or 50-Amp Generator Inlet?
In Charge Electric installs both 30-amp and 50-amp generator inlets.
The correct size depends on the portable generator being used and its electrical output.
Most portable generators designed to provide 120/240-volt power can be used with a properly designed generator inlet installation. Some smaller generators provide only 120-volt output and may not be suitable for this type of connection.

What Is a Generator Interlock?
A generator interlock is a mechanical safety device installed at the electrical panel.
The interlock prevents the generator breaker and utility main breaker from being turned on at the same time. This helps prevent the portable generator from backfeeding the utility system while the generator is supplying power to the home.
In Charge Electric supplies and installs an interlock designed for the specific electrical panel when an approved and compatible interlock is available.
Can an Interlock Be Installed on Every Electrical Panel?
The short answer is no.
The electrical panel must have the proper internal configuration, sufficient breaker space in the required location, and an appropriate interlock must be available for that particular panel.
Sometimes a panel may appear to have enough room from the outside, but after removing the panel cover and inspecting its internal configuration, we may determine that an interlock cannot be properly installed.
If the existing panel cannot accommodate an interlock, we will explain the available options before proceeding with additional work.
What About Permits and Inspections?
Permit and inspection fees are not included in the $900–$1,300 typical installation range.
When a permit and inspection are required by the applicable local jurisdiction, In Charge Electric’s permitting charge is $345. Permitting and inspection requirements are based on the applicable local jurisdiction.
Do I Need to Buy a Generator Cord?
If you already have the proper generator cord, you do not need to purchase another one.
For homeowners who need a cord, In Charge Electric typically carries 30-amp and 50-amp generator cords in common lengths ranging from approximately 10 to 20 feet, depending on availability.
Our commonly stocked generator cords typically cost between $196 and $245. Longer cords may be available when needed and would be priced separately.
The appropriate cord and generator placement will depend on the generator, property conditions, inlet location, and applicable manufacturer and safety instructions.
Do I Need to Buy the Interlock Kit?
Again, the short answer is no.
In Charge Electric supplies the appropriate interlock as part of a standard inlet and interlock installation.
Because interlocks are specific to the electrical panel, we determine the proper equipment after evaluating the existing panel.
Can I Use a Portable Generator I Already Own?
In most cases, yes.
The homeowner is responsible for purchasing and maintaining the portable generator, and many of our customers already own their generator before contacting us.
We review the generator's electrical specifications to determine the appropriate inlet, breaker, wiring, and connection requirements.
Some smaller generators that provide only 120-volt output may not be suitable for connecting to the home's electrical panel through a standard 120/240-volt generator inlet arrangement.
What Can I Power With My Portable Generator?
That depends primarily on the size and capacity of the generator and the electrical requirements of the equipment you want to operate.
A generator inlet and interlock does not increase the amount of electricity the generator can produce. Homeowners are responsible for managing the electrical loads they operate during an outage so the total demand remains within the generator's capacity.
Large electrical loads, including central air-conditioning systems, can require substantial power. Whether a particular generator can operate these loads depends on the generator and the equipment being powered.
What About a Manual Transfer Switch?
A generator inlet and panel interlock isn't the only way to connect a portable generator to a home.
In certain situations, a manual transfer switch may be another option. A manual transfer switch can be configured to supply predetermined household circuits from the portable generator and does not use the same panel interlock arrangement.
Because we install manual transfer switches less frequently and the appropriate setup varies by home, these installations are evaluated and priced individually.
Portable Generator Safety
Portable generators produce carbon monoxide and must be operated outdoors.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends operating portable generators outside and at least 20 feet away from the home, with the exhaust directed away from the home and other buildings.
Property layouts vary, and homeowners should always follow the operating, placement, clearance, and safety instructions provided by their generator manufacturer.
Never operate a portable generator inside a home, garage, basement, crawlspace, shed, or other enclosed area.
