Panels, The Electrical Service & Underground

If you use the city of Leesburg as your electrical provider, there are a few important things to know if you need a new electrical panel or service.

Your electrical service is the heart of your system, bringing power into your home from the city of Leesburg. This can be done either overhead from a utility pole or through underground power lines that connect to your electrical meter.

In some areas the city of Leesburg may require homes with overhead electrical services to transition to underground services.

If the area is overhead and is fed further upstream by overhead, then those services can remain overhead.

Services that are in areas where Leesburg has already converted the primary and or secondary to underground, then those services will have to be underground. There are some areas where everything around that area is underground, and those remaining enclaves will have to go underground.

Exceptions can be made for emergencies, such as a burnt-out panel or downed tree. Leesburg reviews every electrical job and makes the final determination.

Why is this important to you? Installing a new service will require hiring an electrical contractor to handle trenching, installing electrical feeders, and backfilling the trench, in addition to setting up the new electrical service.

Additionally, if your home only has a meter outside, it now must include a means of disconnect. The 2020 NEC® introduced a requirement in Section 230.85 for an emergency disconnect at one- and two-family dwelling units. This ensures first responders have a suitable exterior disconnecting means during natural disasters, fires, floods, etc. A service disconnect switch or main circuit breaker outside the home can fulfill this requirement.
